Letterkenny News - Help Support Alan Doherty
A 17-year-old Letterkenny schoolboy is aiming to go to America for a 14-hour operation that will give him a new chin.
Alan Doherty, a student at Letterkenny Vocational School, was born with a rare hereditary chin disorder called “Maxillofacial”.
This means that he has no lower chin and has to breathe through a tube in his throat. Alan is also unable to swallow food or drinks, and he cannot talk.
When Alan was born in 1989 his parents were told that he was unlikely to live, but Alan ignored the doctors. His condition meant that he had to spend over a year in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Dublin.
But now he is currently trying to raise money for an operation in America on June 11th. This planned operation will give Alan a chin, but is expected to cost in the region of $250,000.
Alan lives in Letterkenny with his mother Bernie, father Danny, sister Celine and brother Daniel. His family have embarked on a fundraising drive, both in America and Ireland.
Last summer, Alan was a competitor in the New York State Games for the physically disabled. He competed in many events including archery, swimming and discus, and brought glory to Donegal, bringing home five gold medals, five silver and a bronze.
Former North Western Health Board CEO, Pat Harvey, is backing the campaign and is optimistic that the Health Service Executive will make a substantial contribution towards the costs. He also hopes that the burden of fundraising can be taken away from the family.
Speaking through his light writer talking keyboard, Alan spoke us of his high hopes for the upcoming fundraising events. “We need as much money as possible, as soon as possible. I am begging the people of Donegal, please help me. Please help me now. Thank you all so much!”
If you would like to help, please contribute to the Friends of Alan Doherty Fundraising Account in AIB Letterkenny. The account no. is 15038040.
